4 Ways To Build Your Squad

Tried and tested ways to get the support you deserve.

By: Shannon Siriano Greenwood

Even the most successful women we know doubt their own abilities sometimes. (Trust us, it's more common than you think.)

One of the best remedies for self-doubt is finding a support squad, a group of people who can help you make important decisions and work through those inner thoughts that are potentially holding you back.

But not everyone has a safe place to go when they need unbiased advice. This kind of support can't come with strings attached from family and friends who just want "what's best for you".

Whether you on the verge of a pivotal career move, ready to level up in your current role, or looking to feel more fulfilled in the work that you do, having supportive people around you, will help you gain the confidence you need to reach your goals without self-sacrifice.

1. TRADITIONAL MENTORSHIP

A mentor is someone who asks thoughtful questions. They can be a great resource to navigate professional decisions.

How to find them: You may already have relationships with past coworkers or former bosses that are primed for a mentor relationship. If you are entering a new industry or role, this is also a good time to connect with someone who has experience in this area to ask for their advice on what to look out for.

2. HIRE YOUR SQUAD

Whether it is a therapist, counselor, or coach, there is a time when the guidance of a professional is just the right kind of support.

How to find them: It is important to find the right person for your needs. Searching online can be a place to start or if you are unsure of what type of support you need, ask for a referral from a friend to get started.

3. PHONE A FRIEND

It is a sad fact that maintaining friendships as an adult can feel like a chore. But having someone to pump you back up when you are feeling down, is an invaluable gift.

How to find them: A way to meet people who can be potential friends is to get out, do things you enjoy where others will be, and make the first awkward move, just like dating.

4. JOIN A GROUP

Networking groups and other community organizations are a great way to connect with others. This is exactly why we created SWELL by Rebelle our small group peer mentorship program.

How to find them: Learn about our programs and events by signing up for our newsletter (link below) or search for groups in your area.
